About the CAF Champions League
History
The competition was created in 1964 as the "African Cup of Champions Clubs." The first edition was won by Cameroon's Oryx Douala, who beat Stade Malien 2-1 in the final. In 1997, CAF reformed the competition along the lines of the UEFA Champions League, introducing a group stage and renaming it the "CAF Champions League." Al Ahly are the competition's most decorated club in history with a record 12 titles. In the 2025-26 edition, South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns claimed their second continental title by beating Morocco's FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate, following a 1-1 draw in the second leg played on 24 May 2026 at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Trophy roll
- Al Ahly — 12 titles in total, the competition's most decorated club in history.
- Mamelodi Sundowns — Winners of the 2025-26 edition, their second continental title.

Competition format
The CAF Champions League features 16 clubs split into four groups of four teams, with each club facing the other three in its group home and away.
At the end of the group stage, the top two teams from each group qualify for the quarter-finals, played over two legs, as are the semi-finals and the final, the latter being played over two matches rather than a single game.
Qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup
The CAF Champions League winner qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup, contested between the champions of the six continental confederations.
