Manchester City officially confirmed on Wednesday morning the signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea for €145 million (around £125 million), on a five-year contract.

A record-equalling transfer

The move equals the record for the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, previously held by Liverpool's signing of Alexander Isak. A World Cup winner with Argentina, Fernández had been looking to leave Chelsea since March.

Reunited with Maresca

The signing reunites Fernández with his former Chelsea coach, Enzo Maresca, who took charge of Manchester City this summer in succession to Pep Guardiola, and who viewed the Argentine midfielder as a key reinforcement after several players left that position during the summer transfer window.

After the deal was completed, Fernández said: "Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are. I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies."

Key takeaways
