About the Egyptian Premier League
History
The Egyptian football league was founded on 22 October 1948 by royal decree, unifying the local leagues that existed at the time into a single national competition. It is today regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious leagues in Africa, ranked the continent's top league by CAF for the 2024-2025 season. The league has been dominated since its inception by Al Ahly, champions 45 times, far ahead of their historic rivals Zamalek (15 titles). Only five other clubs have ever won the title: Ghazl El Mahalla, Ismaily, Al Mokawloon Al Arab, Olympic Club, and Tersana.
Trophy roll
- Al Ahly — 45 titles in total, the country's most decorated club and CAF's African Club of the Century.
- Zamalek SC — 15 titles, Al Ahly's historic rival.
- Ismaily SC — One of only five other clubs to have ever been crowned Egyptian champions.
- Ghazl El Mehalla — Former Egyptian champion, a historic club from the Nile Delta.

- Ismaily SC — A historic club from the Suez Canal region, a former Egyptian champion.
Competition format
The 2025-2026 Egyptian Premier League features 21 teams playing a single opening phase, before the league splits into two groups.
In this first phase, each team plays every other team once (single round, no return leg).
At the end of this phase, the league splits into two groups:
- Championship group: the top 7 teams, competing for the national title.
- Relegation group: the remaining 14 teams, competing to avoid the drop.
The standings are determined by points earned:
- Win: 3 points
- Draw: 1 point
- Loss: 0 points
At the end of the season:
- The winner of the championship group is crowned Egyptian champion.
- The bottom four teams in the relegation group are relegated to the Egyptian Second Division.
Qualification for African competitions
The best-placed clubs in the Egyptian league earn qualification for the continental club competitions organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF):
- CAF Champions League
- CAF Confederation Cup
The champion and runner-up of the championship group qualify for the CAF Champions League, while the third-placed side earns a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup. Egyptian clubs hold the continental record with 18 CAF Champions League titles.
