In a night that will live forever in football history, Lionel Messi became the greatest World Cup goalscorer of all time with 18 goals — surpassing the legendary Miroslav Klose — by scoring twice against Austria at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

The first goal came in the 38th minute after a brilliant through ball from Thiago Almada, Messi ghosting between the Austrian defenders and finishing with his right foot. In added time, after Julian Álvarez's initial effort was saved, Messi pounced on the rebound to squeeze the ball home.

He now has five goals in this World Cup campaign. "Every goal in a World Cup is a gift. I'm happy for the team and most importantly we are through," Messi said. Argentina qualify for the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
