History

Qatari football began with an unofficial 1963-64 season, before the first official edition of the championship was played in 1972-73, won by Al Esteqlal (now known as Qatar SC). The competition is known today as the "Qatar Stars League." The league has been dominated since its inception by Al Sadd, founded in 1969 and champions a record 19 times, most recently in the 2025-26 season, far ahead of Al-Rayyan (8 titles).
