About the 2026 World Cup
History
The World Cup was first played in 1930 in Uruguay, the host nation and the tournament's first-ever winner. Brazil are today the most successful nation with 5 titles, ahead of Germany and Italy (4 titles each), Argentina (3 titles, most recently in Qatar in 2022), France and Uruguay (2 titles each), and England and Spain (1 title each). The 2026 edition marks a historic turning point: it is the first tournament to feature 48 teams (up from 32) and the first World Cup co-hosted by three countries, the United States, Canada, and Mexico, bringing the tournament back to North America 32 years after the 1994 US edition. Following the semi-finals, Spain (who beat France 2-0) and defending champions Argentina (who beat England 2-1) met in the final on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium, where Spain won 1-0 after extra time to claim their second World Cup title. The day before, on 18 July 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, England beat France 6-4 to take third place.
All-time trophy roll
- Brazil — 5 titles (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), the most successful nation in the tournament's history.
- Germany — 4 titles (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014).
- Italy — 4 titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006).
- Argentina — 3 titles (1978, 1986, 2022), defending champions and finalists in the 2026 edition.
- Spain — 1 title (2010), finalists in the 2026 edition.
Competition format
For the first time, 48 teams take part in the tournament, split into twelve groups of four playing a single round-robin mini-league.
- The top two from each group (24 teams) plus the eight best third-placed teams qualify for a brand-new Round of 32.
- This is followed by the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, a third-place match, and the final.
- The champions must now win eight matches, one more than under the previous 32-team format.
Host countries
The United States, Canada, and Mexico jointly host the competition — the first World Cup ever organized by three countries.
Qualified teams
The best national teams from each confederation take part in the tournament: Europe (UEFA), Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC), South America (CONMEBOL), North and Central America (CONCACAF), and Oceania (OFC).
2026 World Cup favourites
Traditional favourites include Argentina, France, Brazil, Spain, England, and Germany. Other national teams such as Morocco, Portugal, or the Netherlands can also play a leading role.
Morocco at the 2026 World Cup
After their historic run at the 2022 World Cup (semi-finalists), Morocco shone again at the 2026 edition: the Atlas Lions finished their group unbeaten (a draw against Brazil, wins over Scotland and Haiti), eliminated the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32, then Canada (3-0) in the Round of 16, before falling to France (0-2) in the quarter-final.
