An injury picked up on international duty
According to available reports, De Jong played through the tournament's closing stages despite the pain, receiving injections before matches against Tunisia and Morocco. That decision ultimately aggravated the injury to his right knee, sustained while on international duty.
Close to €2 million for Barça
Because the injury occurred while De Jong was on national-team duty, Barcelona are entitled to financial compensation from FIFA. The Catalan club filed its claim in late July and is expected to receive close to €2 million, assuming the recovery timeline holds at around four months.
A return hoped for before year's end
Barcelona, who have made De Jong's recovery a priority, hope to have their midfielder available again before the end of the calendar year, with a return to action pencilled in for around mid-November.
