History of Manchester City

Founding and Early Years

Manchester City was founded in 1880 as St. Mark's (West Gorton), before becoming Ardwick and then adopting its current name in 1894.

Club Evolution

The club has played its home matches at the Etihad Stadium since 2003, originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Now with a capacity of around 61,470 following the expansion of the North Stand, renamed the "Pep Guardiola Stand", it is one of England's major stadiums.

Great Managers

Pep Guardiola radically transformed the club during his 2016-2026 tenure, winning 20 major trophies including six English league titles and the club's first-ever Champions League in 2023. Enzo Maresca succeeded him in 2026.

Iconic Players

The club's takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008 marked the start of a period of dominance driven by players such as Sergio Agüero, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, architects of the club's most successful era.

Major Achievements

Manchester City have won 10 English league titles, six of them under Pep Guardiola, along with a Champions League (2023) and a total of 36 major trophies, making the club one of the most dominant forces in English football over the past decade.

The Club Today

Presided over by Khaldoon Al Mubarak and managed by Enzo Maresca since 2026, Manchester City enter a new era following Pep Guardiola's departure, while retaining their ambition to dominate the English and European scenes, against local rivals Manchester United.
