Spain cruise into the quarter-finals with a dominant 3-0 win over Austria

Spain put on a commanding display to knock Austria out of the World Cup 2026, winning 3-0 in the round of 16 with Mikel Oyarzabal stealing the show with a brace. La Roja are firmly in the conversation for the title.

Oyarzabal breaks the deadlock (36')

Spain were in control from the first whistle, and the breakthrough came on 36 minutes when Mikel Oyarzabal finished calmly from a Cucurella assist after a slick passing move, putting Spain in a commanding position before half-time.

Porro doubles the advantage (66')

There was no let-up after the break. Pedro Porro drove forward and unleashed a powerful effort on 66 minutes — assisted by Alex Baena — to make it 2-0, effectively ending Austria's hopes of a comeback.

Yamal withdrawn after an outstanding display (85')

Lamine Yamal was replaced by Gavi on 85 minutes having put in a superb shift down the right wing. The teenage sensation had caused Austria all manner of problems throughout the match and was given a well-earned rest with the game already won.

Oyarzabal seals it with a brace (89')

Oyarzabal added a second late on — again assisted by Cucurella — to complete an emphatic scoreline and underline Spain's quality on the night. A deserved brace for the striker who was everywhere.

Austria bow out

Austria exit the tournament having failed to make their mark. They were unable to cope with Spain's technical quality and intensity, and rarely threatened to score.

What's next?

Spain advance to the quarter-finals in impressive form. With a settled squad, a clinical attack and a mean defence, La Roja look every inch a team capable of going all the way in this tournament.
