History
Brazil's first attempt at a national championship dates back to 1959, in an experimental format, before a genuinely continuous national competition took hold from 1971 under the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The championship went through several formats over the decades — group stages, knockout phases, combined regional tournaments — before settling, from 2003 onward, into its current single round-robin format played home and away, modeled on the European system.
