History of the Brazil national team

Founding and Early Years

The Brazilian Seleção is governed by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), founded in 1914. The only nation to have appeared at every World Cup finals, Brazil established itself from the 1950s onward as the birthplace of "Jogo Bonito," the beautiful game.

Team Evolution

The Maracanã, opened in 1950 in Rio de Janeiro, remains the Seleção's iconic stadium. It was the scene of the traumatic "Maracanazo," Brazil's 1950 World Cup final defeat to Uruguay (1-2) — a founding shock that pushed the country to reinvent its football.

Great Managers

Vicente Feola delivered Brazil's first World Cup triumph in 1958, unveiling a 17-year-old named Pelé. Mário Zagallo, a world champion as a player in 1958 and 1962, went on to become a world champion as head coach in 1970, a unique feat. Carlos Alberto Parreira (1994) and Luiz Felipe Scolari (2002) carried this tradition of success forward.

Iconic Players

Pelé, the only player to win three World Cups (1958, 1962, 1970), is regarded as one of the greatest of all time, alongside Garrincha, nicknamed "the joy of the people." Ronaldo, a two-time world champion (1994, 2002), was for a long time the World Cup's all-time top scorer, while Neymar remains the Seleção's all-time top scorer.

Major Achievements

Brazil hold the record for World Cup titles with five triumphs: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. They have also won the Copa América nine times, most recently in 2019 on home soil. At the 2026 edition, the Seleção suffered a shock Round of 16 exit against Norway (1-2), missing the quarter-finals for the first time in 36 years.

The Team Today

Led by Italian Carlo Ancelotti, the first foreign-born head coach in its history, Brazil aim to turn the page on their 2026 disappointment and reclaim their place among the very top nations in the FIFA World Ranking.
