About the Copa América
History
The Copa América is the oldest international football competition in the world, first played in 1916 to mark the centenary of Argentina's independence. It was at this first edition, won by Uruguay after a decisive draw against hosts Argentina, that the participating federations founded CONMEBOL on 9 July 1916. Originally called the "South American Championship," the competition took its current name, "Copa América," in 1975, the same year it adopted its modern knockout final-stage format. Argentina are today the competition's most successful country with a record 16 titles, ahead of Uruguay (15 titles). In the most recent edition, played in the United States in 2024, Argentina claimed that 16th title by beating Colombia 1-0 after extra time in the final, on a goal from tournament top scorer Lautaro Martínez, who came on as a substitute.
Trophy roll
Competition format
The Copa América today features 16 national teams: CONMEBOL's ten member associations, plus six invited teams, mostly from CONCACAF.
Teams are split into four groups of four, playing a single round-robin mini-league, before the top two from each group qualify for the quarter-finals, which are played, like the semi-finals and final, as single knockout matches.
