Founding and Early Years

The Uruguay national team, nicknamed "La Celeste," is governed by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), founded in 1900, one of CONMEBOL's founding members. Despite the country's small size, it established itself from the earliest days of international football as one of its very top powers, winning the very first World Cup in 1930.

Team Evolution

The Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, built for the 1930 World Cup, is the only stadium in the world recognised by FIFA as a Historical Monument of World Football.

Great Managers

After decades in the wilderness, Óscar Tabárez revived Uruguay during his long reign as head coach between 2006 and 2021, notably leading the team to a World Cup semi-final in 2010. Marcelo Bielsa now leads La Celeste through a generational transition.

Iconic Players

Obdulio Varela, captain of the 1950 World Cup triumph over Brazil, and Enzo Francescoli, the iconic playmaker of the 1980s-90s, embody La Celeste's glorious history. Diego Forlán, winner of the 2010 World Cup Golden Ball, and Luis Suárez, the national team's all-time top scorer with 69 goals, carried the most recent generation.

Major Achievements

Uruguay won the first two editions held on American soil: in 1930, on home soil, as the very first World Cup in history; and again in 1950, in Brazil, beating the hosts 2-1 in front of 200,000 spectators at the Maracanã, a feat immortalised as the "Maracanazo." They also hold 15 Copa América titles. At the 2026 edition, Uruguay failed to advance beyond the group stage.

The Team Today

Under Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay are going through a rebuilding phase after their 2026 disappointment, while remaining, thanks to their rich history, one of the respected nations of South American football.
