Ecuador Search for New Coach, With Regragui Among the Candidates
The Ecuadorian Football Federation is searching for a new head coach for Ecuador (La Tri), following Argentine Sebastián Beccacece's resignation after their round-of-32 exit from the 2026 World Cup against host nation Mexico, despite a remarkable run that saw Ecuador reach the knockout stage for the first time in twenty years, highlighted by a surprise win over Germany in the group stage. According to several Ecuadorian outlets, Moroccan coach Walid Regragui's name has emerged among the candidates being considered for the role. A local journalist reported that Regragui is one of the most prestigious names linked to the national team, with interest from his camp in the position. The Ecuadorian federation has not officially confirmed any contact or negotiations at this stage. Regragui had left his post as Morocco's head coach in March 2026, months before the World Cup began, with Mohamed Ouahbi taking over and leading the Atlas Lions through the tournament. Other names linked to the Ecuador job include Argentine Luis Zubeldía, while candidates such as Guillermo Almada, Jorge Sampaoli, and Martín Anselmi have reportedly been ruled out.
