El-Shenawy's Absence from Egypt's Camp: Injury or Real Crisis with Hossam Hassan?

The absence of Mohamed El-Shenawy, Al Ahly and Egypt's goalkeeper, from the Pharaohs' latest squad gathering sparked widespread speculation about a possible rift with head coach Hossam Hassan. So what's really going on?

The official reason for his absence

Al Ahly officially announced that El-Shenawy is suffering from a grade-two adductor muscle strain, requiring an intensive treatment program. The national team's staff called up a replacement goalkeeper to cover for him during the international break.

Where the tension started

Before the injury, reports had already surfaced of friction between the goalkeeper and his coach, tracing back to Egypt's World Cup qualifier against Iran. According to those reports, Hossam Hassan had reportedly promised El-Shenawy the starting spot, only to change his mind at the last moment in favor of Mostafa Shobier. El-Shenawy was said to be deeply unhappy with the decision, reportedly considering not even sitting on the bench in a squad that included four goalkeepers.

An official denial

For his part, Ibrahim Hassan, the national team's football director, denied any real crisis between El-Shenawy and the coaching staff, stating that talk of a planned meeting with the football federation to resolve the situation had no basis in fact, and that the relationship between the two men remained entirely normal.

What's next?

Al Ahly and Egypt fans are now waiting for El-Shenawy to return to full fitness, with the goalkeeper expected to rejoin the Pharaohs' plans once recovered, his place between the posts still considered a strong option once he regains full physical condition.
