The German Football Association sacked Julian Nagelsmann after Germany's round-of-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay on penalties — one of the biggest shocks of that round. The federation moved quickly toward a successor of Jürgen Klopp's stature.

According to German newspaper Bild, Klopp has agreed a contract with the federation running through the end of the 2030 World Cup, on an annual salary higher than Nagelsmann's reported €7 million.

Klopp returns to management after more than two years away since leaving Liverpool in 2024, bringing his close aides Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders into the new Mannschaft coaching staff.

As part of the agreement, the German federation will not pay any compensation to the Red Bull group for ending Klopp's role as the group's global head of football, with Klopp remaining a brand ambassador.

The appointment is part of an effort to rebuild the German national team after the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup, ahead of the major tournaments to come.
