History of the Germany national team

Founding and Early Years

The Germany national team is governed by the German Football Association (DFB), founded in 1900. The 1954 "Miracle of Bern," the first World Cup triumph, achieved against Puskás' great Hungary side, marks the starting point of the team's legend.

Team Evolution

Nicknamed "Die Mannschaft," Germany play some of their home matches at the Allianz Arena in Munich, one of the main venues of German football.

Great Managers

Sepp Herberger orchestrated the "Miracle of Bern" in 1954, before Helmut Schön led Germany to the 1974 World Cup (on home soil) and the 1972 European title. Franz Beckenbauer, captain of the 1974 triumph, went on to become a world champion as head coach in 1990, a rare feat achieved by very few men in football history. Jupp Derwall (Euro 1980) and Berti Vogts (Euro 1996) round out this rich managerial history.

Iconic Players

Franz Beckenbauer, captain of the 1974 World Cup triumph and a champion as both player and coach, and Gerd Müller, one of the greatest goalscorers in football history, embody Germany's golden era. Lothar Matthäus, captain of the 1990 title, holds the record for World Cup finals appearances, while Manuel Neuer guarded the goal during the 2014 triumph.

Major Achievements

Germany have won the World Cup four times (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014 — the latter in Brazil, including a stunning 7-1 semi-final win over the hosts) and the European Championship three times (1972, 1980, 1996). They also won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017. At the 2026 edition, the team suffered a shock Round of 32 exit, losing on penalties to Paraguay.

The Team Today

Led by Jürgen Klopp, Germany are entering a new rebuilding cycle after their 2026 disappointment, while remaining, thanks to their rich history, one of the historic powers of world football.
