MLS has fined Lionel Messi after he struck Philadelphia Union's Quinn Sullivan around the back of the head, during Inter Miami's match against Philadelphia, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

What happened?

The official punishment

Messi received neither a yellow nor a red card during the match, but the league fined him an undisclosed amount "for violating the league's policy regarding hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent." It is the second sanction Messi has received since joining MLS in 2023, following a fine in February 2025 for grabbing the neck of a New York City FC coaching staff member.
