History of Philadelphia Union
Founding and Early Years
Philadelphia Union was awarded its franchise on 28 February 2008, driven by the grassroots "Sons of Ben" supporters group founded in 2007, and began MLS play in 2010. The club have played since their founding at Subaru Park, on the banks of the Delaware River in Chester.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "The Union," the club wear navy blue and gold, referencing Continental Army uniforms, and their name honours the union of the original Thirteen Colonies, of which Philadelphia was the first capital.
Great Managers
Jim Curtin, the club's longest-serving manager with over ten years in charge (2014-2024), won the 2020 Supporters' Shield and led the team to its best-ever season in 2022, culminating in a lost MLS Cup final, as well as two CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals.
Iconic Players
Sébastien Le Toux scored the club's very first goal. Alejandro Bedoya, captain from 2016 to 2023, and Dániel Gazdag, the club's all-time top scorer, embody Philadelphia Union's modern era, as do academy products Brenden Aaronson and Mark McKenzie.
Major Achievements
Philadelphia Union have won two Supporters' Shields (2020, 2025), without winning MLS Cup (runners-up 2022) or the US Open Cup (runners-up 2014, 2015, and 2018).
