The Bavarian club, chasing a third straight title under Vincent Kompany, put on a real statement performance, with only Harry Kane failing to get on the scoresheet amid the goal flurry, in a match that also marked Manuel Neuer's 600th official appearance for the club.
Promoted side Elversberg caused a sensation by beating hosts Bayer Leverkusen 3-2: the hosts raced into a lightning start with goals from Petkov (8'), Campbell (9') and Mokwa (46'), before Patrick Schick pulled one back for Leverkusen (77') and Kofane added a second deep into stoppage time (90+1'), but it wasn't enough. The shock came on Carles Martínez's very first official match in charge of Leverkusen.
In a wild six-goal thriller, Union Berlin opened the scoring through Emmanuel Latte Lath (3'), before a Younes Ebnoutalib hat-trick turned the match in Eintracht Frankfurt's favour (10', 11', 67'). But Union Berlin fought back with two late goals from Leopold Querfeld (79') and Tim Skarke (90+2'), for a spectacular 3-3 draw.
