Founding and Early Years
The works sports club that gave rise to Bayer Leverkusen traces back to 1904, born from employees of the Bayer chemical group requesting a sports club; its football section was founded on 31 May 1907. This industrial origin gives the club its historic nickname "Werkself" (the factory team).
