Coach Zinedine Zidane held his first press conference in charge of the France national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps, as he announced the squad for four Nations League matches against Turkey, Belgium (twice), and Italy.
Mbappe named captain
Zidane announced Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe as the team's new official captain, praising his versatility:
"He's able to play in all three positions."
Mbappe responded to the decision on Instagram, commenting on a photo with Zidane: "Welcome to your home."
Dodging the Ballon d'Or debate
Asked about the Ballon d'Or amid controversy sparked by earlier comments from Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele on the award, Zidane chose not to dwell on the subject:
"I'm focused on the next four matches."
Earlier in the month, Zidane had publicly backed Lionel Messi to win the award, overlooking the chances of his own squad's stars.
