About J1 League

History

The J.League was founded on November 1, 1991, and played its first season in 1993 with ten founding clubs, including Kashima Antlers, Yokohama Marinos, Verdy Kawasaki, Nagoya Grampus and Urawa Red Diamonds. Verdy Kawasaki won the very first title in that inaugural season. Since then, Kashima Antlers have established themselves as the league's most successful club, with a record 9 championships, the first of which came in 1996. They are also the only founding club never to have been relegated since the league's creation. In 2018, the club also won the AFC Champions League, confirming their status as a benchmark of Japanese football.
