The Jürgen Klopp era has officially begun at the helm of the German national team, after his appointment as the new head coach of Die Mannschaft, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany's shock round-of-32 exit from the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay. Klopp has signed a four-year contract, beginning on 15 August 2026 and running through 2030.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf welcomed the appointment, saying that Klopp embodies passion, credibility, and the ability to inspire people like few others, while sporting director Rudi Völler praised his ability to develop young players and get his teams to perform under pressure.
In his first statements, Klopp set clear boundaries regarding the media coverage surrounding him and his family, saying he would walk away the moment criticism turned personal, whether from the federation or the media. He also described leading the German national team as the peak of his coaching career, vowing to make bold decisions to bring the Mannschaft back to the podium, and warning of surprises in his upcoming selections.
His coaching staff will include Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders, and Sven Bender, while former international Per Mertesacker will take over as the DFB's sporting director starting January 1, replacing Andreas Rettig.
