Messi equalized for Inter Miami in the 24th minute, curling a direct free-kick from the edge of the box that struck the inside of the post before nestling into the net, canceling out Anders Dreyer's early opener for San Diego.
New record numbers
Messi's professional career goal tally now stands at 930, including 75 direct free-kicks, while his Inter Miami total has reached 101 goals since joining MLS in 2023. The goal was also his 20th in the league this season, making him only the second player in MLS history to score 20-plus league goals in three consecutive seasons, joining LAFC's Denis Bouanga.
Match context
The goal comes just days after Messi reached the century mark for Inter Miami, achieved during a Campeones Cup win over Cruz Azul. With this draw, Inter Miami extended their run of dropped points, recording their fourth consecutive draw in MLS.
