Will Lamine Yamal play in the final? What Spain is doing to protect him
Seen limping after the semi-final and then missing a training session due to thigh discomfort, Lamine Yamal is the subject of a special precautionary protocol from Spain ahead of the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina.

Spain are going through tense days over the physical condition of their young star Lamine Yamal, with the national team's coaching staff activating an "emergency plan" to secure his availability for the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina on 19 July.
What happened?
Yamal was seen limping in the first half of Spain's 2-0 semi-final win over France on 14 July, after a passage of play that earned him a decisive penalty. Although he finished the match, the player missed a group training session on Thursday due to discomfort in his left thigh, appearing with strapping around the muscle, immediately fuelling speculation over a possible absence from the final.
The Spanish federation moves to reassure
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) was quick to rule out any genuine injury concern, stating that Yamal is "expected to be available" for Sunday's final. According to several Spanish outlets, the individual session Yamal followed, alongside teammate Pedro Porro, was purely precautionary workload management, not a sign of a new injury.
A physically difficult season
This is not the first time this season Yamal has dealt with physical issues: he had already missed five matches at the start of the 2025-26 campaign due to pubalgia, before suffering a hamstring injury during the closing stretch of Barcelona's La Liga title run. Despite these concerns, head coach Luis de la Fuente still included him in his 26-man World Cup squad.
A major stake ahead of the final
At just 19, Yamal has been one of the standout revelations of this edition, unbeaten in every match he has started between the World Cup and the Euros. Spain now hope to secure his full availability as they chase a second world title after 2010, against a Lionel Messi-led Argentina side.
