History of the Spain national team

Founding and Early Years

The Spain national team, nicknamed "La Roja," is governed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), founded in 1913. Long regarded as underachievers relative to their pool of talent, Spain took decades to convert their potential into major titles.

Team Evolution

Spain have no fixed national stadium, rotating their home matches between several venues, including the Santiago Bernabéu and Metropolitano in Madrid, La Cartuja in Seville, and Mestalla in Valencia.

Great Managers

Luis Aragonés ended a 44-year continental drought by winning Euro 2008, launching the tiki-taka era. Vicente del Bosque extended this golden age with the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, becoming the first side to hold both titles simultaneously. Luis de la Fuente has since written a new golden chapter: a record fourth continental title at Euro 2024, followed by the 2026 World Cup triumph.

Iconic Players

Iker Casillas, the legendary goalkeeper and captain of the 2008, 2010, and 2012 triumphs, and Andrés Iniesta, scorer of the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, embody Spain's golden era. David Villa remains the national team's all-time top scorer, Sergio Ramos its most-capped player, while Rodri, current captain and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, led Spain to their 2026 World Cup triumph.

Major Achievements

Spain have won the World Cup twice (2010 in South Africa against the Netherlands, and 2026 against Argentina) and hold the record for continental titles with four European Championships (1964, 2008, 2012, 2024). They also won the UEFA Nations League in 2023.

The Team Today

Reigning world champions after their 1-0 win over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, Luis de la Fuente's Spain now hold both the world and continental titles simultaneously, establishing themselves as the benchmark of international football.
