Trump wants an all-American World Cup, and reveals an Infantino idea: US - China

Two days before the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, US President Donald Trump made a surprising comment during a reception attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, touching on the hosting of a future edition of the tournament.

"Choose the United States again, without Mexico or Canada"

Trump first argued for a future World Cup hosted solely by the United States:

  • "What we should do is you should choose the United States of America again, this time we'll leave Mexico and Canada out"

A remark at odds with the current format of the 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Infantino's proposal: United States and China

The US president then revealed a suggestion he said Gianni Infantino had made to him for a future edition:

  • "He said we could do it China and the United States for next time"

Trump added, jokingly, that players would get "a nice, short flight in between games" — a remark widely seen by observers as a joke rather than a serious announcement.

A plan still far from reality

Strictly speaking, the next World Cup open for bidding is the 2038 edition, since Saudi Arabia has already secured hosting rights for 2034. Trump's remarks came during a reception attended by Infantino, two days ahead of the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium.
