About the Community Shield
History
The Community Shield (originally the "Charity Shield") was first played in 1908, succeeding the "Sheriff of London Shield," an annual fixture between a leading professional club and a leading amateur club. In this first edition, newly-crowned champions Manchester United beat Queens Park Rangers 4-0 following a 1-1 draw, with both matches played at Stamford Bridge. With the creation of the Premier League in 1992, the competition became a match between the English champion and the FA Cup winner from 1993 onward. In 2002, it was renamed the "Community Shield" following a ruling by the Charity Commission. Manchester United are the competition's most successful club with 21 titles. In the 2025 edition, Crystal Palace won their first-ever title, beating Liverpool on penalties (3-2, after a 2-2 draw) at Wembley.
Trophy roll
- Manchester United — 21 titles in total, the competition's most decorated club.
- Crystal Palace — Winners of the 2025 edition, the club's first-ever title in the competition.

Match format
The Community Shield is played as a single match at Wembley, before the start of the Premier League season.
- It pits the Premier League champion against the previous season's FA Cup winner.
- If the same club completes the domestic double, the league runner-up or the beaten FA Cup finalist takes their place instead.
- If level after regular time, the match is decided directly by a penalty shootout, with no extra time played.
