History of Manchester United
Founding and Early Years
Manchester United was founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, by workers at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot in Manchester. The club took its current name in 1902, following a financial rescue led by president John Henry Davies.
Club Evolution
The club moved to Old Trafford in 1910, a stadium that quickly became one of England's most iconic. Now with a capacity of around 74,140, it is nicknamed "the Theatre of Dreams".
Great Managers
Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the club after the 1958 Munich air disaster and led it to England's first European Cup triumph in 1968. Sir Alex Ferguson then dominated English football for over two decades (1986-2013), famously winning English football's first treble in 1999. Michael Carrick has managed the team since 2026.
Iconic Players
The club has developed and showcased some of English football's greatest players, from the 1950s "Busby Babes" to the "Class of '92" (Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, the Neville brothers) who defined the Ferguson era, to Cristiano Ronaldo, discovered at Old Trafford before becoming one of the greatest players in history.
