About the Champions League

History

The Champions League traces its origins to the European Champion Clubs' Cup, created in 1955 at the initiative of French newspaper L'Équipe. The very first edition (1955-56) was won by Real Madrid, who then retained the trophy for the following four editions — the longest run of consecutive title wins in the competition's history. In 1992, the competition adopted a group-stage format and took its current name, the "UEFA Champions League." Real Madrid remain today's most decorated club with a record 15 titles, well ahead of AC Milan (7 titles), Bayern Munich, and Liverpool (6 titles each). Since the 2024-25 season, the competition has used a new 36-club format. Paris Saint-Germain, crowned champions for the first time in their history after beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 final in Munich, retained their title in 2026 by beating Arsenal on penalties (4-3 after a 1-1 draw) in Budapest, becoming the second club after Real Madrid to retain the trophy since the current format was introduced in 1992.

Trophy roll

  • Real Madrid15 titles in total, the competition record, unbeaten in every final reached since 1992.
  • AC Milan7 titles.
  • Paris Saint-Germain2 consecutive titles (2025, 2026), current holders.
  • Inter MilanRunners-up in the 2025 edition, beaten by PSG (0-5).
  • ArsenalRunners-up in the 2026 edition, beaten by PSG on penalties.

Competition format

Since the 2024-25 season, the Champions League has been played under a new 36-club format known as the "Swiss model": each club faces eight different opponents (four at home, four away), drawn from four seeding pots, within a single league table.

  • The top eight in the table qualify directly for the round of 16.
  • Clubs ranked 9th to 24th play a two-legged knockout play-off round for the remaining round of 16 spots.
  • Clubs ranked below 24th are eliminated from all European competitions for the season.
  • The round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final are then played as a traditional knockout bracket, with the final itself a single match at a neutral venue.
