About the Premier League

History

The Premier League was born in 1992, when First Division clubs — England's old top flight — broke away from the Football League to form an independent competition able to negotiate its own broadcasting rights directly. This commercial shift transformed the Premier League into one of the richest and most watched leagues in the world. The 20-club format has been in place since the 1995-96 season. The competition has also been a pioneer in adopting new technology, introducing goal-line technology in 2013-14, followed by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) from the 2019-20 season onward.
