About the Trophée des Champions
History
The Trophée des Champions was launched in September 1955 as the "Challenge des Champions," pitting the French champion against the Coupe de France winner. The first edition, played on 14 September 1955 at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille, saw Stade de Reims dominate LOSC Lille (7-1). The competition ran from 1955 to 1973, was briefly revived in 1985 and 1986, then resumed permanently in 1995 under its current name. Since 2009, the match has been played abroad (Tunisia, Morocco, the United States, Gabon, China, Austria, Qatar, Kuwait). Paris Saint-Germain is the competition's most successful club with 14 titles, including the 2025 edition, won on penalties (4-1, after a 2-2 draw) against Olympique de Marseille on 8 January 2026 in Kuwait City.
Trophy roll
- Paris Saint-Germain — 14 titles in total, the competition's most decorated club.
- Olympique de Marseille — Runners-up in the 2025 edition, beaten on penalties by PSG.
- Racing Club de Lens — PSG's opponent in the 2026 edition, as winners of the 2025-26 Coupe de France.
Match format
The Trophée des Champions is played as a single match, usually to open the Ligue 1 season.
- It pits the Ligue 1 champion against the previous season's Coupe de France winner.
- If the same club completes the league-and-cup double, the Ligue 1 runner-up faces the cup winner instead.
- If level after regular time, the match is decided directly by a penalty shootout.
