History of the France national team

Founding and Early Years

The France national football team is governed by the French Football Federation (FFF), founded in 1919, although the side played its very first international match back in 1904. It gradually established itself over the 20th century as one of the great nations of world football.

Team Evolution

Nicknamed "Les Bleus," France play their major home matches at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, opened in 1998 for the World Cup and able to hold more than 80,000 spectators.

Great Managers

Michel Hidalgo delivered France's first major title with the 1984 Euros on home soil, before Aimé Jacquet won the country's first World Cup in 1998. Didier Deschamps, captain of the 1998 triumph, went on to become a world champion as head coach in 2018, joining the select group of men to win as both player and manager. He handed the reins to Zinédine Zidane at the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Iconic Players

France has produced Zinédine Zidane, who scored twice in the 1998 World Cup final and was named the tournament's best player in 2006, and Michel Platini, top scorer of the 1984 Euros. Thierry Henry remained France's all-time top scorer for over a decade, while Kylian Mbappé, the current captain, has established himself as one of the best forwards in the world.

Major Achievements

France have won the World Cup twice (1998 on home soil against Brazil, 2018 in Russia against Croatia) and the European Championship twice (1984, 2000), becoming one of the few nations to hold the world and continental titles simultaneously. They have also won the FIFA Confederations Cup twice (2001, 2003) and the UEFA Nations League in 2021. At the 2026 edition, they reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Spain (0-2).

The Team Today

France are entering a new era with Zinédine Zidane taking over as head coach at the end of the 2026 World Cup, after more than a decade under Didier Deschamps. Driven by a generation led by Kylian Mbappé, the team remains one of the very top nations in the FIFA World Ranking.
