History of Lens
Founding and Early Years
Racing Club de Lens was founded in 1906, born from the meeting of the "Gallibots," a nickname for the region's young miners, and students passionate about football. The club adopted red and gold in 1923, earning its supporters the nickname "Sang et Or" (Blood and Gold).
Club Evolution
RC Lens play at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, opened in 1933 and named in tribute to Félix Bollaert, a director of the Lens mining company. The club embodies the identity of the mining region and enjoys support among the most passionate fanbases in France.
Great Managers
Daniel Leclercq led RC Lens to their sole league title in 1997-98, then the 1998-99 Coupe de la Ligue. Franck Haise (2020-2024) revived the club's European ambitions, before Pierre Sage (2024-2026) carried them to a historic 2nd-place Ligue 1 finish and their first-ever Coupe de France in 2025-26.
Iconic Players
Marc-Vivien Foé, the Cameroonian midfielder, was one of the architects of the 1997-98 title. Seydou Keita emerged at Lens before joining Sevilla and then Barcelona, where he won two Champions Leagues, becoming one of the greatest African players in history.
