About Ligue 1
History
French professional football's top division was born in 1932, with Olympique Lillois claiming the very first title. The competition changed its name in 2002, when the National Football League became the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) and renamed the top flight "Ligue 1." The number of clubs has varied over time: reduced from 20 to 18 in 1997, raised back to 20 in 2002, then brought back down to 18 from the 2023-24 season onward to strengthen French clubs' European competitiveness. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was introduced in Ligue 1 during the 2018-19 season.
Trophy roll
- Paris Saint-Germain — 14 titles, including five in a row between 2021-22 and 2025-26.
- AS Saint-Étienne — 10 titles, between 1957 and 1981.
- Olympique de Marseille — 9 titles.
- AS Monaco — 8 titles.
- FC Nantes — 8 titles.
- Olympique Lyonnais — 7 titles, including seven in a row between 2002 and 2008.
Historic clubs
- Paris Saint-Germain — The absolute dominant force of French football since the 2011 Qatari takeover, backed by massive investment.
- Olympique de Marseille — The only French club to win the Champions League (1993), famous for the passion of its Vélodrome stadium.
- AS Saint-Étienne — The most decorated club in the championship's history before the PSG era, nicknamed "Les Verts" (The Greens).
- Olympique Lyonnais — Held the record for consecutive titles before PSG, with seven straight from 2002 to 2008.
- AS Monaco — The principality's club, known for developing young talents later sold for large fees.
Competition format
Ligue 1 is contested by 18 teams playing each other home and away, for a total of 34 matchdays between August and May.
The standings are determined by points earned:
- Win: 3 points
- Draw: 1 point
- Loss: 0 points
At the end of the season:
- The champion is crowned Ligue 1 winner.
- The bottom two clubs are directly relegated to Ligue 2, while the 16th-placed side enters a playoff.
- The top teams qualify for UEFA's European competitions.
Qualification for UEFA competitions
Ligue 1's best-placed clubs earn qualification for continental competitions organized by UEFA:
- UEFA Champions League
- UEFA Europa League
- UEFA Europa Conference League
The exact number of Champions League spots (usually four to five) depends on France's UEFA coefficient, while an extra Conference League spot often goes to the Coupe de France winner.
