About the Coupe de France

History

The Coupe de France was created on 15 January 1917 by the Comité Français Interfédéral (CFI), under the impetus of Henri Delaunay. Initially named the "Coupe Charles-Simon" in honor of the CFI's founder, who died in action in 1915, it was conceived as a symbol of national unity in the midst of the First World War. Paris Saint-Germain is today the competition's most successful club with 16 titles, ahead of Olympique de Marseille (10 titles). In the 2025-26 edition, Racing Club de Lens won its very first title in the competition, beating OGC Nice 3-1 in the final, played on 22 May 2026 at the Stade de France.

Trophy roll

Historic clubs

Competition format

The Coupe de France brings together thousands of clubs from every level of French football, from amateur regional sides to Ligue 1 clubs, in a single-match knockout format throughout, including the semi-finals.

Ligue 1 clubs (PSG, Marseille, Lyon, Monaco, Lille, and others) enter the competition from the Round of 32 onward, facing sides from lower divisions.

Qualification for Europe

The Coupe de France winner earns a spot in the following season's UEFA Europa League league stage, provided they finish the league season outside the top six.

If the winner finishes in Ligue 1's top six (already qualified for Europe through their league finish), their spot passes to the 7th-placed league team, who qualifies for the UEFA Conference League play-offs instead.
