History of Marseille
Founding and Early Years
Olympique de Marseille was founded on 31 August 1899 by René Dufaure de Montmirail, referencing the ancient Olympic Games and Marseille's Greek heritage, founded by Phocaean settlers. The club first played at the Stade de l'Huveaune before moving in 1937 to the Stade Vélodrome, their home ever since.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Les Phocéens" or "Les Olympiens," OM wear white trimmed with blue and gold, evoking the white stone and Mediterranean sea of the Phocaean city.
Great Managers
Raymond Goethals, in charge during Bernard Tapie's presidency, led OM to the 1990-91 league title and, most notably, victory in the 1992-93 European Cup against AC Milan, the only European title in French football history to date.

Jean-Pierre Papin, the 1991 Ballon d'Or winner and top scorer of the league for five consecutive seasons, embodies Marseille's golden age. Didier Drogba delivered an explosive 2003-04 season, while Franck Ribéry emerged at OM before joining Bayern Munich.
