History of Paris Saint-Germain
Founding and Early Years
Paris Saint-Germain was founded on 12 August 1970, from the merger of Paris FC, created to give the capital a top-level club, and Stade Saint-Germain, a club from Saint-Germain-en-Laye founded in 1904. Promoted to Division 1 in their first season, the club split from Paris FC in 1972 and was relegated to Division 3 before returning in 1974 and moving into the Parc des Princes, their home ever since.
Club Evolution
PSG adopted red and blue, Paris's traditional colours referencing revolutionary figures Lafayette and Bailly, paired with white from Saint-Germain-en-Laye's coat of arms. The Eiffel Tower crest element, added in 1972, was redesigned in 2013 under president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
Great Managers
Luis Fernández, across two spells, won the 1996 Cup Winners' Cup. Thomas Tuchel (2018-2022) delivered consecutive league titles and led the club to its first Champions League final in 2020. Luis Enrique (since 2023) delivered the club's first-ever Treble in 2024-25 (Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Champions League), followed by a second consecutive European title in 2025-26.
Iconic Players
Raí, captain in the 1990s, embodies the club's first major successes. Zlatan Ibrahimović (2012-2016) defined the Qatari era with his attacking performances. Kylian Mbappé (2017-2024) became the club's all-time top scorer before his transfer to Real Madrid.
Major Achievements
PSG have won 14 Ligue 1 titles, numerous Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue titles, as well as two consecutive Champions League titles (2024-25, 2025-26), becoming the first French club to achieve this, in addition to one Cup Winners' Cup (1996).
The Club Today
Led by Luis Enrique and chaired by Nasser Al-Khelaifi since 2011, PSG dominate French football with five consecutive league titles (2022-2026) and have established themselves as a benchmark of European football.
