History
The Copa del Rey is Spanish football's oldest national competition, played since the 1902-03 season (a "Coronation Cup" held in 1902 to celebrate King Alfonso XIII's coronation is sometimes regarded as its direct forerunner). Every season it brings together hundreds of clubs, from amateur regional-division sides up to La Liga's biggest names. FC Barcelona is the competition's most successful club with 32 titles, ahead of Athletic Bilbao (24 titles) and Real Madrid (20 titles). In the 2025-26 edition, Real Sociedad lifted the trophy by beating Atlético Madrid on penalties (4-3) in the final played on 18 April 2026 at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville.
