History of Real Madrid

Founding and Early Years

Real Madrid was founded on 6 March 1902 as Madrid Football Club, before receiving the royal title "Real" in 1920, granted by King Alfonso XIII. The club played its first matches at various grounds around Madrid before settling permanently in the Spanish capital.

Club Evolution

The club opened the Chamartín stadium in 1947, renamed Santiago Bernabéu in 1955 in honour of its historic president, the architect of the club's golden era in the 1950s. Following a complete reconstruction that began in 2019 and finished in late 2024, the stadium now has a capacity of around 83,000 and a retractable roof, making it one of the most modern venues in Europe.

Great Managers

Miguel Muñoz led the club to its first European triumphs in the 1960s, before figures like Vicente del Bosque or Zinédine Zidane (three consecutive Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018) left their mark on the club's history. Carlo Ancelotti also guided the club to new heights in the 2020s, before José Mourinho's arrival in 2026.

Iconic Players

Real Madrid has counted some of the greatest players in history among its ranks: Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás in the 1950s-60s, and more recently Cristiano Ronaldo (2009-2018), the club's all-time top scorer, alongside Sergio Ramos, Luka Modrić and Karim Benzema.

Major Achievements

Real Madrid is the most decorated club in Champions League history, with 15 titles. It also holds the record for Spanish league titles, with 36 La Liga crowns. The club's full trophy list is available further up this page.

The Club Today

Under president Florentino Pérez, Real Madrid has completed the full reconstruction of its iconic stadium and aims to reclaim its standards of European dominance under José Mourinho, who returned to manage the team in 2026, against its historic rival FC Barcelona.
