History of Real Sociedad
Founding and Early Years
Real Sociedad's origins trace back to Club Ciclista de San Sebastián, founded in 1904, which created a football section that became independent under the name Real Sociedad de Foot-Ball in 1909 — the same year the club won its very first Copa del Rey title.
Club Evolution
After many years at the Atocha stadium, the club moved in 1993 to a new stadium that has carried several sponsor names over the years, today known as Reale Arena, with a capacity of around 40,000, in the heart of San Sebastián.
Great Managers
Alberto Ormaetxea led the club to its only two Spanish league titles, in 1981 and 1982, marking the club's golden era. Pellegrino Matarazzo took charge of the team for the 2025-26 season.
Iconic Players
Goalkeeper Luis Arconada, one of the greatest Spanish keepers in history, embodies the golden era of the 1980s, alongside the club's all-time top scorer Jesús María Satrústegui (162 goals). Xabi Alonso, a product of the club's academy, also began his career there before going on to an outstanding international career.
Major Achievements
Real Sociedad has won La Liga twice (1980-81, 1981-82) and the Copa del Rey four times, the first as early as 1909 and the most recent in 2026, alongside a Spanish Super Cup in 1982.
