History
The competition was created in 1971 by UEFA as the "UEFA Cup," succeeding the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. It adopted its current name, the "Europa League," in 2009, alongside a reform of its format. Sevilla FC is the competition's most decorated club with 7 titles between 2006 and 2023, and remains the only club to have never lost a final, including three won in a row (2014, 2015, 2016).

Since the 2024-25 season, the Europa League is played under a single league-phase format featuring 36 clubs, each playing eight matches (four at home, four away) against eight different opponents.
At the end of the league phase:
- The top 8 teams qualify directly for the Round of 16.
- Teams ranked 9th to 24th play a knockout play-off round for a Round of 16 spot.
- Teams ranked below 24th are eliminated from the competition.

The Europa League winner earns a direct spot in the following season's Champions League league phase, if not already qualified through their domestic league.
