History of Athletic Club
Founding and Early Years
Athletic Club was founded in 1898 in Bilbao, in the Basque Country, by workers and students influenced by the British communities who had come to work in the region's mines and shipyards, which explains why its name has remained in English. The club adopted a unique policy from the start, fielding only players developed in the Basque Country — an identity it maintains to this day.
Club Evolution
After decades at the historic San Mamés stadium, nicknamed "La Catedral" (The Cathedral), the club opened a new stadium of the same name in 2013, built right next to the old one, with a capacity of around 53,000.
Great Managers
Ernesto Valverde left his mark on the club's recent history across two spells as manager, winning the 2024 Copa del Rey — the club's first major trophy since 1984. Edin Terzić, former Borussia Dortmund manager and 2024 Champions League finalist, succeeded him in 2026.
Iconic Players
Telmo Zarra remains the club's ultimate legend: with 251 La Liga goals, he held the Spanish league scoring record for nearly six decades and won the Pichichi Trophy for the league's top scorer six times, with the award for the Basque Country's top league scorer named after him.
Major Achievements
Athletic Club has won eight Spanish league titles, all before 1985, along with a total of 25 Copa del Rey titles, the third-best haul in the country behind FC Barcelona. The 2024 Copa del Rey triumph ended a 40-year wait for a major trophy.
