About the DFB-Pokal
History
The competition was created in 1935 as the "Tschammer-Pokal," won in its first edition by 1. FC Nürnberg, before being suspended in 1944 and disbanded with the fall of Nazi Germany. It was revived in 1952-53 in West Germany under its current name, the "DFB-Pokal," won that year by Rot-Weiss Essen. Bayern Munich are the competition's most decorated club with a record 21 titles. In the 2025-26 edition, the club retained their title by beating VfB Stuttgart 3-0 in the final, played on 23 May 2026 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, thanks to a Harry Kane hat-trick scored entirely in the second half, completing the domestic double.
Trophy roll
- Bayern Munich — 21 titles in total, the competition record, and current holders.
- VfB Stuttgart — Runners-up in the 2025-26 edition, beaten by Bayern Munich (0-3).
Competition format
The DFB-Pokal features 64 clubs: every Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga team, plus the four best-placed 3. Liga sides.
The tournament is played as a single-match knockout over six rounds, culminating in a final held every year at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
Qualification for the Europa League
The DFB-Pokal winner earns a direct spot in the following season's UEFA Europa League league stage. If the winner has already qualified for Europe through their Bundesliga finish, the spot passes to the best-placed league team not yet qualified.
