Founding and Early Years
RB Leipzig was founded in 2009 when the Red Bull group bought the playing rights of SSV Markranstädt, a fifth-division club, with the stated goal of reaching the Bundesliga within eight years, a target met in just seven seasons. The name "RasenBallsport" (literally "lawn ball sport") was chosen to work around German rules forbidding a club being named directly after a sponsor, while preserving the "RB" abbreviation.

The club play at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, wearing red and white with a stylised bull motif echoing the Red Bull brand identity.
