Founding and Early Years

Borussia Mönchengladbach was founded on 1 August 1900 as Fussball Club Borussia 1900, "Borussia" being the historic Latin name for Prussia, the region to which the city belonged.

Club Evolution

The club played at the Bökelbergstadion from 1919 to 2004, before moving to Borussia-Park, with a capacity of 54,042. They take their legendary nickname "Fohlenelf" (the Foals) from a young, technically gifted team built by Hennes Weisweiler in the 1960s, including a young Günter Netzer.

Great Managers

Hennes Weisweiler (1964-1975) built the "Fohlen" side and won three league titles (1969-70, 1970-71, 1974-75) as well as the 1975 UEFA Cup. Udo Lattek (1975-1979) continued the dynasty with two further titles (1975-76, 1976-77) and another UEFA Cup in 1979, making Gladbach Bayern Munich's great rival throughout that golden decade.

Iconic Players

Günter Netzer, the elegant playmaker, is one of the most celebrated figures of 1960s-70s European football. Berti Vogts, the fearsome defender nicknamed "The Terrier," later became Germany's national team manager. Danish forward Allan Simonsen won the 1977 Ballon d'Or while at the club.

Major Achievements

Borussia Mönchengladbach have won five German league titles, all in the 1970s (1969-70, 1970-71, 1974-75, 1975-76, 1976-77), three DFB-Pokal titles (1959-60, 1972-73, 1994-95), and two UEFA Cups (1974-75, 1978-79).

The Club Today

Led by Eugen Polanski and chaired by Rainer Bonhof, a title-winning player at the club in the 1970s, Borussia Mönchengladbach finished 13th in the Bundesliga in 2025-26, a modest position that contrasts with the club's historic stature.
