Founding and Early Years

VfL Wolfsburg was founded on 12 September 1945, emerging from the Volkswagen factory workers' sports club, to which it has remained closely tied ever since. The club adopted green and white as its colours from founding.

Club Evolution

Wolfsburg have played since 2002 at the Volkswagen Arena, its name directly reflecting the carmaker's ownership. In May 2026, the club restored its historic old crest, its battlements evoking Wolfsburg Castle, abandoned for 24 years, a powerful symbol of its identity.

Great Managers

Felix Magath (2007-2009) masterminded the shock 2008-09 Bundesliga title, sealed on the final matchday, the only league title in the club's history. Dieter Hecking (2012-2016) later led Wolfsburg to a 2nd-place finish in 2014-15 and DFB-Pokal victory in 2015 against Borussia Dortmund.

Iconic Players

The Grafite-Edin Džeko partnership scored 54 combined league goals in the 2008-09 title season, with Grafite finishing as the league's top scorer. Kevin De Bruyne illuminated the club's midfield during the victorious 2015 season, before his transfer to Manchester City.

Major Achievements

VfL Wolfsburg have won one German league title (2008-09), one DFB-Pokal (2015), and one DFL-Supercup (2015), without ever lifting a major European trophy.

The Club Today

Led by Tobias Strobl and run by a supervisory board chaired by Sebastian Rudolph, with no traditional president role since the club is 100% owned by Volkswagen, Wolfsburg play in the German second division for the 2026-27 season after a relegation that ended 29 consecutive top-flight seasons.
