History of Hamburger SV
Founding and Early Years
Hamburger SV's roots trace back to SC Germania Hamburg, founded on 29 September 1887. The current club was formed on 2 June 1919 from a three-way merger of SC Germania, Hamburger FC von 1888, and FC Falke Eppendorf.
Club Evolution
Nicknamed "Der Dino" (The Dinosaur), referencing its status as the only founding member of the 1963 Bundesliga never to be relegated until 2018, the club wear blue, black, and white. They play at the Volksparkstadion, whose entrance features a statue of Uwe Seeler's foot, its greatest legend.
Great Managers
Branko Zebec (1978-1980) delivered the club's first title in 19 years, in 1978-79. Ernst Happel (1981-1987) succeeded him and won two consecutive titles (1981-82, 1982-83) as well as the 1982-83 European Cup, beating Juventus, making him one of the few managers to win the trophy with two different clubs.
Iconic Players
Uwe Seeler, loyal to the club from 1953 to 1972, is its ultimate legend and one of the greatest forwards in German football history. Kevin Keegan, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner (1978, 1979) while at HSV, and Felix Magath, scorer of the winning goal in the 1983 final, are among the club's other great names.
Major Achievements
Hamburger SV have won six German league titles, three DFB-Pokal titles, one Cup Winners' Cup (1976-77), and one European Cup (1982-83), and remain the only club to have played every Bundesliga season without interruption from 1963 to 2018.
The Club Today
Led by Merlin Polzin and chaired by Henrik Köncke, Hamburger SV returned to the Bundesliga in 2024-25 after several seasons in the second division, finishing 13th in their first season back in 2025-26.
