SC Freiburg

Founding and Early Years

SC Freiburg was founded on 30 May 1904, emerging from the gradual merger of two pioneering city clubs, Freiburger FV 04 and FC Schwalbe. The club adopted red and white, the traditional colours of the Breisgau region.

Club Evolution

After decades at the Dreisamstadion, the club moved in 2021 to the Europa-Park Stadion, with a capacity of around 34,700. Nicknamed the "Breisgau-Brasilianer" (Breisgau Brazilians) for their attractive attacking football in the 1990s-2000s, the club long moved between divisions before settling durably into the Bundesliga.

Great Managers

Volker Finke (1991-2007) led the club to its first Bundesliga promotion in 1993 and a memorable 3rd-place finish. Christian Streich (2011-2024), the most loyal manager in modern Bundesliga with thirteen seasons in charge, took Freiburg to the 2022 DFB-Pokal final and repeated European qualifications.

Iconic Players

Nils Petersen remains the club's all-time top scorer and holds the Bundesliga record for goals scored as a substitute. Christian Günter, the long-serving captain and the club's all-time appearance record holder, embodies the loyalty and stability of the Freiburg project.

Major Achievements

SC Freiburg have never won the Bundesliga or the DFB-Pokal, losing the latter's 2022 final to RB Leipzig on penalties. The club has nonetheless established itself as a model of sustainable management and regular European qualification since the mid-2010s.

The Club Today

Led by Julian Schuster and run by a club council chaired by Marc Schmid, after Freiburg abolished its traditional president role in 2025 in favour of this new collective body, the club finished 7th in the Bundesliga in 2025-26, qualifying for the Europa Conference League.
